A Common Theme: Expectation. It’s not unusual for annual business meetings, conventions, graduations, or special church functions to depend on a charged atmosphere of anticipation to capture our attention. Evangelistic crusades attract outsiders with the potential for the miraculous. (Come to the big tent: see God’s man of faith and power! Miracles.  Signs. Wonders.) Live concerts draw crowds because of the unknown. (Will they get arrested? Play new songs? Make mistakes?) Annual business meetings try to build excitement too. (Celebrate [...]

It’s been six years since last detected in the USA: Recently, another cow (the fourth, ever in the US) tested positive for BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy), better known as Mad Cow Disease. This could be cause for alarm, but the media seemed to pass along news and reassurances from the authorities that all is well and not to worry. The facts in ‘this’ case are simple: the diseased animal was found through routine testing (at a pet food facility). This [...]

One insidious question resounds in the ears of every vegan I’ve ever met.  If you want to quickly find common ground with a vegan, just ask them how many times people ask where they get their protein.  It’s an uneducated question for certain, but it is one that we get asked.  Again, and again. For years, I’ve triedto explain.  Educate. I’ve never felt that I was able to really engage the subtle skeptics.  I rehearse that meat eating provides proteins [...]

There’s a picture making its’ way around the interwebs, that can be found at Snopes fact finding site. The picture reveals a pink sludge that resembles soft-serve ice cream, and is said to contain chicken parts that will become nuggets for the fast food industry. Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver is also listed on the Snopes article in what he describes as a failed attempt to enlighten American children that fast food isn’t necessarily healthy food. Snopes does a wonderful job [...]

Season in Hell ` 2011-11-06 (Click the link above for the 50 minute message.) Hell is about certainty: There’s more in the Bible about Hell than there is about Heaven, because Heaven is left open to the imagination. Hell is crystal clear…fire, brimstone, pain, suffering…and lawyers. (That was a comment from the congregation.) The poor are already in Hell, because they have no options. Heaven is about choices: We are rich when we have choices. The ability to choose and [...]

Occupy Asheville: 23 October 2011 The 99, Culture of Camping Under A Bridge, Community, Media, & Taxpayers. My Assessment, Diagnosis & Prescription Last weekend I was in Asheville, NC with my wife (who attended a training class).  I wasn’t planning anything special, because I was behind on my reading and seem to always have paperwork to do.  I wrote a blog post and enjoyed some carrot juice at Earthfare and then drove back to Greenlife Grocery so that I’d be [...]

Here’s a quick review of our simple philosophy of holistic health. Jump Start: Juice Fast. Get in Gear: Go Raw. Keep Going: Superfoods The Juice Fast: Jump starting your health is high on most people’s lists of things to do someday. Whoever coined the phrase “Comfort Food” was really onto something.   Food can absolutely affect your mood, emotional health, coping ability, and stress levels. A high live food diet can support increased energy, stabilized mood and improved health. Here are the “ABC’s” of eating for the mind, at least from my perspective:   1. Alkaline Forming Diet: An alkaline forming diet represents the platform for health.  It supports stabilized energy levels, emotional wellness, and moderates detoxification processes within the system as [...]

Yes, chocolate is found in nature and it does in fact; grow on trees. The health implications are diverse, however I’ll share a few key points. As a “superfood,” chocolate may be a superhero with character flaws. There are some credible benefits, although the interesting thing about this “food of the gods” is that animals do not eat it in nature.  Hence the inherent implications of deity.  First the negative commentary, and then the benefits: there are some among the [...]
